Arts in Education Vocabulary

Fleece - Wool shorn from a sheep or goat.
Skirt - To pull off and discard all the poor or dirty wool from a fleece.
Scour - To soak a fleece clean in hot, soapy water.
Card - To comb the wool fibers to align and knock out dirt
Drum Carder - The machine which cards wool into batts.
Batt - A large, even flake of combed wool, for felting, spinning or quilting.
Hand Cards - Hand held steeled toothed combs for wool.
Rolag - A jelly rolled "tube" of wool formed by hand cards for spinning or felting.
Flick Carder - Small brush used to open the end of a lock of wool.
Lock - A piece of wool as it was shorn from the animal; characterized by a blunt cut, open end and a closed, sometimes curly tip.
Felt - (noun) fabric made by applying heat, moisture and sometimes pressure to wool.
(verb) to apply moisture and heat and pressure to wool in order to mesh and fuse its fibers into a solid fabric.
Full - (verb) To roll or rub felted wool in order to make it thicken and strengthen.
Asiatic Method - Rolling felt to full it.
Scandinavian Method - Rubbing felt with a wooden tool, hands or on a washboard to full it.
Nuno Felt - Japanese technique of fusing wool to silk or other open weave fabric to increase drape and lighten felt fabric.
